Rocket Phonics

At Madley Brook School, phonics is taught using the Rocket Phonics programme which ensures systematic coverage and progression. Children begin formal phonics lessons in their Reception year. Phonics is taught to the whole class. Children can access the online Rocket Phonics resources including ebooks and flashcards. They also take home a decodable reading book to read. Reading this book and accessing the materials online at home regularly with an adult, supports their reading progress in school. 

Phonics lessons are led by the class teacher. The children are assessed regularly and those falling behind will receive catch up sessions. Year 1 children take part in statutory Phonics Screening during the summer term, and parents are informed of their child's achievement at the end of the school year.
